Women who understand the importance of community and personal power know that building a network of people committed to their personal and professional growth is critical for success. Women need to build a cadre of people who can support their goals, listen, give opinions, and help to guide them through difficult decisions.
This is especially true when having a group of close nit women friends. Stacey, a retired military leader asserted that she would not have been able to survive working in a male-dominated arena without what she liked to call her ‘Best Buds’. My woman friends are everything to me. I am who I am today, because of them and their support. We give each other advice, lend shoulders to cry on, keep secrets, and boost one another’s self-esteem.
The psychology behind strong female friendships is powerful. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology revealed that women with early-stage breast cancer were four times more likely to die from cancer if they didn't have very many friends. Those with a larger group of friends with early-stage breast cancer had a much better survival rate. An article published on the New York Times website states that women feel they can count on their friends to pull through for them no matter what they are struggling within their lives. [I]
